As the new school year approaches, you need to focus on your child’s oral health to set them up for success. A healthy smile contributes to their well-being and helps boost confidence. Having a healthy smile can even help them concentrate in the classroom. This back-to-school oral health checklist can help your child start school on a high note. With these tips, you can help your child maintain a bright and healthy smile through the school year.

Schedule a Dental Checkup

The first step to a successful back-to-school oral health routine is with a dental checkup. A professional examination allows the dentist to identify any underlying issues. The dentist can provide necessary treatments or preventive care. Regular dental checkups help prevent dental problems and maintain optimal oral health.

Replenish Oral Care Supplies

Before the school year starts, take inventory of your child’s oral care supplies. Ensure you have all the oral health essentials that they may need. Replace worn-out toothbrushes every three to four months. You may need to replace them sooner if you notice frayed bristles. Select soft-bristled toothbrushes that are age-appropriate for your child.  Stock up on dental floss or interdental cleaners. These can promote proper oral hygiene and prevent gum disease

Choose a fluoride toothpaste with the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel, preventing cavities. Ask your dentist if your child would need mouthwash for extra oral health protection.

Establish a Daily Oral Care Routine

Consistency is key to maintaining good oral health. Help your child establish a daily oral care routine. Encourage your child to brush their teeth twice a day for two minutes. Be sure that they use fluoride toothpaste. Teach them proper brushing techniques. Have them brush in gentle circular motions and clean all tooth surfaces.

Show your child how to floss their teeth once a day, especially before bedtime. Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between the teeth and along the gum line. If the dentist recommends mouthwash, instruct your child on how to use it.

Pack a Healthy Lunchbox

A nutritious diet plays a significant role in maintaining good oral health. When preparing your child’s lunchbox, add foods that are good for their teeth.

  • Fresh Fruits and Vegetables. Pack crunchy fruits and vegetables, such as apples, carrots, and celery. These foods stimulate saliva production, which helps wash away bacteria and food debris.
  • Dairy Products. Include low-fat dairy products like cheese, yogurt, or milk. Dairy products are rich in calcium, which promotes strong teeth and bones.
  • Water. Encourage your child to drink water instead of sugary beverages. Water rinses the mouth, maintains hydration, and helps prevent cavities.

Educate and Empower

Be sure to educate your child about the importance of oral health and how it affects their well-being. Teach them the proper techniques of brushing, flossing, and making healthy food choices. Empower them to take responsibility for their own oral hygiene and make it a lifelong habit.
